Verizon and Motorola Introduce two DROID tablets, the DROID XYBoard 10.1 and 8.2

December 8, 2011

Things are beginning to look great for those looking for the latest and greatest tablets to hit the market and Motorola and Verizon look to add to the frenzy. On Dec. 6th, Motorola and Verizon unveiled two new tablets that will be coming to consumers. The new DROID XYBoard tablets are the newest tablets to hit the market and come in two different sizes. The first XYBoard tablet comes at a 10.1 inch display while the other tablet comes in at 8.2 inches in display size. Both tablets have 1.2GHZ dual core processors with 1GB of RAM under the hoods. Both tablets will also come with Motorola’s custom app MotoCast for remote access to non DRM protected music, pictures, photos, and documents stored on your home computers.

To protect the display, both tablets have scratch resistant Gorilla Glass fronts and both are water-repellent so avoid damage from nasty spills while using the tablets. You know, when you’re at the coffee shop and you spill your coffee on your tablet while trying to add sugar to it or something to that effect. The tablet is said to be “lighter than a paperback book and thinner than a AAA battery” which bodes well for physical design of the tablets. If you are looking for a business savvy tablet then these might be up your alley. Both the 10.1 and the 8.2 tablets are equipped with QuickOffice HD, Citrix Go To Meeting and Google Talk for all your office and video chat needs. And the camera’s aren’t bad on the tablets either.

Both tablets have an 5MP rear camera that sports digitial zoom, LED flash, and auto-focusing for good picture capturing and a 1.3 front facing high-definition camera for great video chatting displays. Other specs that tag along with the tablets are listed courtesy of Verizon and Motorola’s press release. Check out what they listed in the release:

  • 10.1-inch and 8.2-inch high-definition In-Plane Switching (IPS) display for DROID XYBOARD 10.1 and DROID XYBOARD 8.2 respectively
  • Mobile Hotspot Capability – share 4G LTE connection with up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices
  • 5-megapixel rear-facing HD cameras with digital zoom, autofocus and LED flash, optimized for capturing the moment
  • 1.3-megapixel HD front-facing cameras perfect for video chatting with friends and family
  • Dijit app allows DROID XYBOARD tablets to double as a universal remote control with an electronic programming guide for TVs, Blu-ray Disc™ players, digital video records (DVR), and most other consumer electronics
  • Support for Google Mobile Services including Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Google Search, Google Maps™ and access to millions of books from Google Books
  • Supports a wide array of separately purchased accessories including an HD station for connecting to speakers and a larger screen, an HD dock to send content via HDMI out to HDTVs and home theater speaker systems and a stylish portfolio with Bluetooth®-enabled keyboard and mouse
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity (802.11 a/b/g/n)
The 10.1 XYBoard tablet is being sold in 3 versions. The 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions of the tablet are being sold for $529.99 for the 16GB, $629.99 for the 32GB, and $729.99 for the 64GB version. The release date has been stated as the to be for the 12th of December but hasn’t been a mention of it in the press release. Droidlife got their hands on a release note for the tablets stating that the tablets were scheduled to be released on the 12th (but more on that later). If the 12th sticks then be ready to make a grab for the tablets. Sadly, until Verizon actually comes out and says a release date they can always be “subject to change”. Here’s the official press release below.
